Humane Web Design

'Plug In' by Nancy Jean Lopez "Plug In" by Nancy Jean Lopez

Since the publication of Alutaybi's study, some humane design elements have already been implemented on SNS and mobile devices. For example, Alutaybi recommended alternative notifications that allow users to preview parts of an SNS post before logging into the app. This feature is available on most smartphones via a lock-screen notification. A brief message will appear on the user's lock-screen, letting them know who submitted a new post and what it was (a message, a photo, a video, etc.). Users can then decide if they want to open the application to view the entire message or wait till later. Facebook has also implemented a status notification feature that tells other users when you are online; other users will see a green dot on your profile picture when you are actively using the application. However, this feature requires the other party's permission to broadcast their availability status. However, even if they are available, it doesn't mean they will be responsive to messages, posts, or notifications ("Designing Social Networks..." 4). For this reason, the research team also suggests several proactive measures to help FoMO-susceptible users establish digital boundaries between themselves and the source of their addiction.
